The Centennial Book

Kevin Starr's new history of LMU is called "Loyola Marymount University, 1911–2011: A Centennial History.""

For two years, California historian Kevin Starr researched LMU’s history to write the definitive chronicle of the university’s first century: “Loyola Marymount University, 1911–2011: A Centennial History.” The result is a story that begins with the arrival of Catholic higher education in Los Angeles, and proceeds through a period of world wars, economic depression, massive societal change and a merger of two Catholic institutions, culminating with growth in the 21st century.

Starr, California state librarian emeritus, has written multiple books on California’s history, including the multivolume “Americans and the California Dream.” He has won numerous awards, including the National Humanities Medal, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Starr's engaging history includes a trove of photos drawn from the William H. Hannon Library Archives and Special Collections, and we've reproduced several of the book's two-page spreads to convey the beauty of the book itself.

Kevin Starr's history may be a perfect holiday gift for the Lion in your family. To order your copy of “Loyola Marymount University, 1911–2011: A Centennial History,” go here.
