Universities compete off the fields, too.
This month, LMU publications won five awards in a nationwide contest (with a few international entries as well) going head-to-head with many of country’s best-known colleges and universities.
LMU Magazine won a Gold Award for excellence in overall design and a Bronze Award for excellence in design for the cover of the Fall 2011 issue in the 2012 competition hosted by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, a professional association of college and university administrators and staff. Judges of the design category base their decisions on creativity, goals, photography, illustration, typography and results.
Along with its print publication awards, LMU Magazine won a Silver Award for a video about Tara Erdmann ’11, the university’s All-American distance runner who will be vying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team that competes in London this summer.
In addition, the competition known as the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards gave two awards to the “Loyola Marymount University Centennial Yearbook: 2011–2012.” The 108-page, limited edition handbook, which traces the past 100 years of university history in photos, text and a timeline, won a Gold Award for a multipage special publication and a Silver Award for institutional publications.
“Our alumni have told us how much they like the new magazine, and these awards confirm their good taste and the talents of our dedicated staff,” said Kathleen Flanagan, vice president of Communications and Government Relations. “We are extremely proud to be in the company of the likes of UC Berkeley and Columbia.”
LMU was one of 10 universities that received five or more awards. Among them were Cornell, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, University of Missouri-Columbia, UC Berkeley and Notre Dame. Since the redesigned magazine was launched in July 2010, it has earned 13 regional and national awards for photography, design and video production.
