I came to law school laser-focused on becoming a public defender. As a teenager, I was placed in a juvenile drug court program. But because I was not able to stay clean and sober, I was in constant violation of my probation. I spent a total of two years incarcerated. I knew that Loyola’s criminal law concentration and clinics made it the perfect school for me. My experience with the criminal system, addiction, and recovery has allowed me to hear and see many people who are charged with crimes in a way that might not be possible for many attorneys. My scholarship allowed me to pursue a career that would not have otherwise been accessible for me.
